Customers of all ages are coming into St Cuthbert’s Hospice shops to snap up everything from cups and saucers to curtains and old jumpers as part of the up-cycling craze that is hitting Britain.
Tracy Chester, retail manager at our Houghton le Spring shop, says: “We’ve noticed over the last few months that we are getting a much wider variety of customer and they are looking at things in a totally different way.
“They see a jumper and wonder if it might make a cushion, or they’ve told me they’ve made a bag out of a pair of curtains. That’s up-cycling and everybody benefits. People are enjoying themselves getting creative and making things that don’t cost much but have that stamp of individuality.”
“And we’re seeing an increased footfall in all our shops, which can only be good for our hospice.”
Tracy and a team of volunteers will be giving advice on up-cycling and exchanging ideas at their St Cuthbert’s Hospice stall at Sunday’s Thrift Fair as part of the Durham Bid at the Gala Theatre in Durham. The fair runs from 12pm to 4pm.
