Rebecca Russell took part in this year’s Colourama in memory of her beloved husband Stephen Russell who died at St Cuthbert’s Hospice in March this year. Stephen was father to Lewis (20), Tyler (14) and Chloe (11). Chloe and Tyler joined their Mum to complete the sponsored 5K event to thank the hospice for the care he received in his final days.

Rebecca from Witton Gilbert said: “We wanted to thank St Cuthbert’s for allowing us the time to make memories before Steve passed away. With the encouragement of St Cuthbert’s Family Support Team the children and I made memory boxes with Steve and since he passed away we’ve continued to make memories with Steve in our thoughts and our hearts as he has been as we took part in Colourama.”

“The hospice really was a home from home for us. They moved a bed in for me so I could sleep beside Steve. He enjoyed being out in the hospice gardens and was happy to be able to enjoy a can of lager in the sunshine if he wanted. Steve’s final days were so peaceful. He passed away listening to his favourite music with myself and my sister Rita by his side. We really want to raise as much as we can for the hospice so that other families can have the same incredible support as we’ve had.”

Laura Barker, Development Manager at St Cuthbert’s Hospice said: “Over 1,000 people signed up to take part in this year’s Colourama. Many of whom were taking part in memory of a loved one. It was such an amazing atmosphere on the day.”

“We are hoping that over £25,000 will be raised in sponsorship monies which would help to pay for around 2 weeks of care provided at the hospice.”

“If everyone was to raise just £25 in sponsorship this would help us to reach this figure. These funds are vital to help us continue to provide outstanding care free of charge to those living in County Durham who need it most.”
