600 Midnight Walkers hear moving testimonies

Hundreds of local women lit up Saturday night with flashing lights and laughter as they completed a fundraising Midnight Walk to raise tens of thousands of pounds for St Cuthbert’s Hospice in Durham.

Nearly 600 women and girls set off from St Leonard’s Playing Fields to walk either once or twice around the Aykley Heads area for the five or ten kilometre event.

Before they set off on the stroke of midnight, walkers had a Zumba warm up, listened to live music and heard heartlfelt testimonies from a series of women whose families have been helped by the hospice. Durham County Council Chairman John Robinson also addressed the crowds.

Cllr Robinson told the crowds he too was greatly impressed by St Cuthbert’s Hospice. And he spoke movingly on stage about loss within his own family.

Cllr Robinson said: “This is an incredible event. The whole of County Durham should be proud of what these ladies are achieving here tonight.”

Event organiser, Lily Axworthy said: “Once again, the Midnight Walk was an extremely successful event.  St Cuthbert’s Hospice enjoys a remarkable relaitonship with the local people and we are so grateful that so many turned out to support us.”
