Family and friends of Wendy Charlton have been fundraising for St Cuthbert’s Hospice since 2014 when Wendy sadly passed away at the hospice aged only 50. Wendy spent only a few hours at St Cuthbert’s but this time was incredibly precious to her and her loved ones. Her daughter Helen recalls “When my Mam became weaker she was taken outside into the hospice gardens in her bed to hear the birds and look up at the sky on a lovely summer’s day, which made her smile. A smile to treasure forever. Her last 8 hours spent in the hospice meant she could pass away in peaceful surroundings and receive the best care.”
To date over £25,000 has been raised in her memory through charity golf tournaments, signing up to dance in Strictly St Cuthbert’s, CrossFit challenges, taking on the Great North Run and many more events. This money has helped to refurbish our café here at St Cuthbert’s and is a lasting testament to Wendy who had always dreamed of owning a café one day.
Wendy’s family have now set their sights on a new fundraising target and are hoping to fund a patient transport minibus for the hospice that will allow us to continue to offer the community our vital day care services for those living with life-limiting illnesses in County Durham. To many of our day guests coming to the hospice is something to look forward to and provides a place to socialise, take part in activities or help access services to manage symptoms or control pain.
A target of approximately £30,000 has been set by Wendy’s family and the first flurry of donations from a multitude of supporters are coming in already. Thank you to Go North East for kick starting the fundraising with a brilliant donation of £1,400 raised at a team Tyne Bridge zip wire event.
